Garden Planters

With all the garden planters available to us today, it's hard to know which one to choose. Too often, people tend to choose their garden planters on style alone. Remember that it is important to take the plant's needs into consideration before choosing the planter. Some things are just common sense, like making sure your planter has an adequate drainage system, but there are other things that you might not be aware of:

  • Know your plant - Can it survive in dry, cold, or hot conditions? Is your plant fully grown? Be sure you choose a garden planter large enough for its expanding roots.
  • Exposure - How much will your garden planter be exposed to during the day? Remember that the sun can dry out a garden planter very quickly. Different materials, such as resin, keep moisture in longer, while terracotta planters tend to dry out much more quickly. Also consider how much wind the plant will be exposed to.
  • Watering - Know when and how often to apply water to your garden planter. Some garden planters have a drip tray or reservoir at the bottom that can filled for the plant to absorb as necessary. Don't accidentally let your plants dry out because they may never recover.
  • Weather - If you plan on leaving your garden planter outside during the winter, there are some things you should know. Materials such as stone, cement, and wood, are not affected by frost they way other materials are.
  • Mobility - Whether making space for a backyard barbeque, mowing the lawn, or simply moving your plants into some much needed shade, sometimes garden planters just need to be moved around a bit. So choose your materials for your garden planter accordingly. Concrete garden planters are wonderful, but you don't want to pull a muscle trying to move them around.
